An impressive FMCG track record does not tell the whole story. Results are shaped by the brand, the market, the channel mix, and the organisation’s ability to execute.
When hiring a mid to senior leader, understanding that context is essential. It helps distinguish experience that will transfer from success that may depend on a very different setting.
Define the next growth problem
Is the business expanding distribution, strengthening a category, improving profitability, building a brand, or creating a more resilient supply chain? These goals point to different leadership profiles.
A clear mandate should name the problem before it names the ideal employer history. This gives the search room to find people with relevant capability, including those whose paths are less obvious.
Look closely at channel experience
Modern trade, general trade, digital commerce, and direct channels create different decisions about customers, margins, teams, and execution. A leader who has worked across channels may bring range; another may bring deep expertise in the one that matters most now.
Ask which channel challenges are central to the role. Then test for the judgment required, not simply the presence of channel names on a résumé.
Understand the operating system around the role
Commercial strategy depends on supply chain, finance, product, and field execution. The next leader’s success will depend partly on their ability to work with these functions and partly on the resources and authority available to them.
Sharing that reality openly makes the opportunity clearer and helps candidates decide whether they can make the contribution expected.
Search for the future, with evidence from the past
Past results matter. So does the way they were achieved. Explore the decisions a candidate made, the team they built, the trade-offs they navigated, and how they adapted when conditions changed.
That is a stronger basis for a hiring decision than a familiar title alone. Learn more about Asterra’s FMCG search focus.
